Keep fit for your board

Surfing is a great way to keep fit – but at the same time you also need to keep fit to be able to stay on your board! I find it so hard to stay motivated at the gym and have never been one of those girls who was into pounding the pavements in the latest running shoes with an MP3 player strapped to my arm. Always makes me think of Paula Radcliffe squatting in the street during the London marathon. Not a classy way to stay trim and active….
Even the exercise bikes and cross-trainers in my fancy state-of-the-art gym just bore me. Unless there is a good episode of Quincy on one of the gym TVs with the subtitles going. Then I can keep going for the whole hour, no problem! I like swimming, but that doesn’t feel like keeping fit to me. When you spend hours and hours of your time paddling furiously on a surf board to just keep up with the waves, a gentle couple of lengths in a calm and quiet indoor pool just seems way too soft.
However, I have now discovered a new way to keep fit without pulling on the wetsuit and heading for the beach; yoga. Yeah, I know. It sounds a bit “New Age” and “1960s” but an hour of yoga is actually really hard work. I was dragged along by a pal who started going when she was pregnant and had stuck with it even after the kid was born. I kind of went along with her to keep her company, but now I go a couple of times a week by myself. I was amazed how sweaty and tired I was at the end of an hour of stretching and bending – and I was amazed how inflexible the body I thought was fit and flexible really was. Guess I’ll have to keep up with the yoga sessions if I want to keep my body fit for the surf board.
